Ski and Snowboard Helmet Components

So what makes a snowboarding or skiing helmet different from a biking helmet? It might seem like a silly question, but just like how you wear different shoes for different sporting activities, helmets are specific to the exercise you’re taking part in. Being on the mountain brings with it a whole host of unique terrains and obstacles. In an event where you may fall and land on your head, a ski helmet is designed specifically for the protection needed in a snow environment. From ear coverage to tailored materials and airflow technology, snowboarding helmets are built to endure everything on the slopes.

One of the main components of a ski or snowboarding helmet is its shell, also known as the outer layer. It’s generally made up of a type of plastic that works to absorb shock and spread it over the surface of the helmet upon impact. At Powster, we’v developed an incredibly durable material called Pow-lymer – but more on that to come. Then you have the inner liner of the helmet, which is what will give you the most comfort when you’re wearing a helmet during shredding season. The inner liner is generally made from EPS, also known as expanded polystyrene, which works to keep your head insulated, as well as further absorb any impact you may experience through compression of the material.

Finding the Right Helmet Fit

The best way to measure the size of the helmet you need is by getting out the tape measure and wrapping it around the largest part of your head – we recommend placing it around your head above your ears, and about one inch higher than your eyebrows. Most ski and snowboarding shops will give you the measurements of the helmet so you can line it up with your head measurements.

The next step is checking how it fits. When you put the helmet on your head, it should feel secure and comfortable, and definitely not too tight. Move your head around a bit and notice if the helmet moves forward or backward, or side to side when you shake your head. If the helmet moves, it’s probably too big. But it’s best to check if you can adjust the strap or inner lining to see if it makes a difference. Try your helmet on with your goggles too, they should fit firmly against the surface without any gaps, and the front of the helmet should cover your forehead for the ultimate form of protection.

As for the chinstrap, it should fit snugly at the back of your throat to ensure that it doesn’t slip upon impact. You want it tight, but not too tight that you can’t chew without feeling choked or pinched by it.

Ski and Snowboard Helmet Features

Vents are hands down the most common feature on a helmet, and there's a good reason for it. When you’re making your way through fresh pow, it’s natural to get a bit hot and sweaty. Small vents in the helmet not only allow airflow to get in to help you manage your temperature when doing physically demanding work, but they also help with keeping the heat in – depending on whether the vents are adjustable. Some helmets also come with fancy extras like pre-installed camera mounts for on-the-go filming, or even clip-in mechanisms for your goggles to attach to. Other features can include detachable visors, ear pads, and drop liners so you can customize your helmet to suit your needs.

And we can’t forget about the helmet bag! It’s super important to keep your helmet in the best condition by wiping it down and putting it away securely in a helmet bag when you’re not using it, so you can enjoy your gear season after season.

Powster Best Seller Helmets

There’s no doubt about it, Powster Helmets are light, comfortable, and they bring a whole new aesthetic to your outfit. Designed for additional comfort with our Pow-LYMER technology, featuring rotation force protection, and with unparalleled durability and lightweight feel, you really can’t go wrong with these helmet products. Available in a range of colors and the option to get your hands on a helmet with or without a visor, you can’t go wrong.

Developed by Powster, Pow-lymer is a shock absorption material that alters its molecular structure upon impact. So, if you do injure your head, it works to spread the impact energy and reduce the transmitted force to the brain. As a result, it helps with reducing concussions and brain injuries at low and mid-speed. Their efficient design also incorporates the latest technology in aerodynamics.

With an internal ventilation tunnel to drive cold air through it and facilitate heat exchange, plus an additional ventilation hole by the brim of the helmet to allow for better air circulation, it ticks all of the boxes for breathability and airflow.
